Lekker is a commonly used word in the Dutch language that is more similar to the word English word luscious than the word tasty. Lekker is used to denote something delicious or sweet. In South Africa, however, lekker has primarly been used in place of the English terms "cool" or "sweet," Lekker man, lekker!
Biltong is a variety of dried, cured and aged meat that originated in Southern Africa. We choose to use beef to make our Biltong, but lots of other meats can be used. It’s typically made by slicing with the grain of the muscle, or flat pieces sliced across the grain. It is similar to beef jerky in that they are both spiced, dried meats. The typical ingredients, taste and production processes differ, the main difference being that biltong is dried slowly and subsequently sliced, whereas jerky is smoked, and sliced prior to drying quickly.
Simple answer, no! The LEKKER Shop's biltong contains no MSG, nitrites or preservatives.
Best answer, in your tummy! Biltong should be stored in a cool, dry place, preferably in a brown paper bag. Vacuum packed Biltong can be stored for up to four weeks as long as it remains sealed. It is best to consume freshly bought though.
There is quite a large difference between expired (also known as "use by date") and best before. We will never sell anything that's expired or reached the use by date. When importing South African groceries, you have to take in consideration that the products are at sea for approximately three months, and some items have shorter dates because of the mass production in South Africa. By the time it reaches the NZ shores, some items, especially chips, have a short time left before they reach their best before date. However we guarantee they are still fresh, as long as the packaging is still sealed. We reduce our prices even items have reached their best before date, as we feel it's not fair for the consumer to pay full price. See MPI website for further info on this topic.
